KIA ANNOUNCES COMPLIMENTARY SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAM FOR THE ALL-NEW 2014 CADENZA PREMIUM SEDAN

Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced a complimentary scheduled maintenance program available for the all-new 2014 Cadenza premium sedan.  The program covers the first five factory-scheduled service appointments and is applicable for 36 months or 37,500 miles.  The program highlights yet another way Kia is elevating value to new levels of sophistication and promises to further differentiate the Cadenza from its competition.

“The Cadenza competes in a class in which customers have higher expectations for their ownership experience. Our complimentary scheduled maintenance program – a benefit many would not have previously associated with the Kia brand – fulfills those expectations,” said John Crowe, vice president of service and after sale operations, KMA.  “The program helps differentiate the Cadenza from its competition and illustrates Kia’s intentions of launching a credible contender into the emerging space between mainstream and luxury.”

Already a tremendous value at a starting MSRP of just $35,1002 (not including $800 destination), the Cadenza packs power, technology and refinement in Kia’s first full-size sedan, and the newly announced complimentary scheduled maintenance program only adds to the vehicle’s value proposition in its segment.  Complimentary scheduled maintenance is available to customers who either purchase or lease3 a new 2014 Cadenza and complete the maintenance work for their vehicles at participating Kia retailers.  The complimentary scheduled maintenance program, which excludes wear and tear items such as tires and brakes, is another benefit along with Kia’s industry leading 10 year/100,000 mile new-car warranty and Roadside Assistance4.

UVO eServices Makes Complimentary Scheduled Maintenance EasyAs Kia’s most technologically advanced vehicle, the 2014 Cadenza comes standard with UVO eServices5, which makes scheduling service appointments easier than ever. UVO eServices monitors service intervals and will alert the owner when it’s time to schedule an appointment at a Kia retailer.  Following on-screen prompts, the system has the ability to contact the retailer and schedule service appointments at the owner’s convenience.  UVO eServices is an enhanced telematics suite that offers a number of safety, maintenance and infotainment functions, including Automatic Diagnostics6, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner’s Smartphone7 equipped with the UVO eServices app, which is available at no charge8.
Through the UVO eServices owner's portal, known as "Car Care Web," owners can check vehicle diagnostics, vehicle status, maintenance schedules, driving behavior, and schedule appointments with their preferred or nearby Kia retailer via their home computer or mobile device.  If UVO's eServices identifies a problem by way of the Automatic Diagnostics function, it will communicate the vehicle's issue(s) and its location to Kia's 24/7 call center or will schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership upon the owner’s request.  Additionally, the user can take advantage of Scheduled Diagnostics from their Smartphone, setting a monthly diagnostic check of the vehicle.  Upon completion, any issues found are automatically forwarded to Car Care Web.

How To Change A Flat Tire

There’s no sound  as disheartening to a driver than the flop flop of a flat tire. They always seem to come at inconvenient times, too. But to a man who knows how to change a flat, that flopping noise is a chance to display his self-sufficiency.
Just like knowing how to jumpstart a car, knowing how to change a flat tire is a skill every man should possess. It will save your own butt when you’re out on some lonely stretch of highway and come in handy when helping a damsel in distress or a hapless traveler on the side of the road. Follow these steps and you’ll back on the road in no time.
Tools needed: Spare tire, jack, lug wrench.
1. Park your car on a flat surface. If you get a flat while on the road, pull your car as far away from traffic as possible . Make sure to put on the emergency brake. It’s also recommended to put a block on the tire opposite of the flat tire. Put to use that fruitcake from Aunt Gertie you’ve been toting around in the trunk. Here’s a blocking example: if your right rear tire is flat, put the block on the front left tire.
2. Remove the hubcap. If your car has a hubcap, remove it so you can get to the lug nuts. Use the hubcap to hold the nuts, just like the dad in A Christmas Story. Just don’t let your kid hold the hubcap or he’ll lose them and drop the F-bomb.
3. Loosen the nuts. Grab your lug wrench and place it on the flat tire’s lug nuts. Loosen them up by turning them counterclockwise. The nuts are probably on there really tight, so you’ll have to use all your man strength to unscrew them. Loosen the nuts a few turns, but don’t take any of them off yet!
4. Place the jack underneath your car. Check your owner’s manual for the correct placement of the jack. Turn the hand crank at the end of the jack to raise the jack until it comes into contact with your car’s frame. Make sure it’s touching a sturdy spot.
5. Jack it up! Start cranking the jack until the wheel is high enough above the ground to remove the tire.
6. Remove the flat. Remove the lug nuts from the wheel. You should be able to do it by hand because you’ve already loosened them. Remove the flat tire and lay it flat. You don’t want the wheel to roll into traffic during rush hour and cause a thirty car pile-up.
7. Slap on your spare. Take your spare tire and line up the lugs, or bolts, with the holes in the wheel and slide the wheel on. Once the wheel is on, take your lug nuts and tighten them by hand until you meet firm resistance.
8. Lower the car. Lower the jack until the wheel is firmly on the ground.
9. Finish tightening your lug nuts. These babies must be on super tight so the wheel doesn’t come flying off while driving to the tire shop to get the flat fixed. So you need to unleash the super power of the star pattern to get those lugs tighter than a deer tick. Use this tightening pattern if you have five bolts on your wheel. Start with any lug nut and then follow this pattern:
If your car has four, use this pattern:

2014 Kia Cadenza First Review: Kia's Biggest Deal Yet

Features, style and value. The Kia kitchen keeps cranking out increasingly tasty dishes using the same three ingredients, and in the 2014 Kia Cadenza it's created a main course aimed at attracting and satisfying some discriminating patrons.
So even if you find it finger-lickin' good, please use the cloth napkins.
The Basics
The 2014 Kia Cadenza is a large sedan comparable with front-wheel-drive entries ranging from the Toyota Avalon to the Buick LaCrosse to maybe even the Acura TL, as well as its own corporate cousin, the Hyundai Azera. The Cadenza starts at $35,900 with destination (higher than Avalon and Lacrosse, and just $900 shy of the premium-badged TL) and tops out at $41,900, new highs for Kia.
Outside
There's nothing particularly head-turning about the Kia Cadenza, but there's something ultimately satisfying about its sporty, substantial, expertly crafted design. More timeless than flashy, we suspect the Cadenza's look will hold up in the long run better than many of its competitors' designs. It's the most upscale Kia ever (for now), and the design is in full support of the mission.
2014 Kia Cadenza
Inside
Inside the 2014 Kia Cadenza, a business-like, all-black dash amplifies the European sport sedan vibe emanating from the sheetmetal. Highlights include a technology offering that evokes the Starship Enterprise (or Millenium Falcon, whichever language your inner geek speaks), an available Nappa leather upgrade (too smooth to keep your hands off), and a backseat that's roomy enough to satisfy even the gangliest royalty. Long-legged drivers will appreciate Kia's first power-extendable thigh support, but we found the driver's seat just satisfactory overall.
2014 Kia Cadenza
On the Road
The 2014 Kia Cadenza is built on the same platform and is powered by the same powertrain as the Hyundai Azera, so we expected the Kia to drive like a sportier version of the Hyundai. What we didn't expect was for the Kia to feel more refined, with far better steering feel and a less obvious suspension -- differences Kia attributes to some minor chassis upgrades plus unique hardware and software tuning.
And while the European sport sedan comparisons stop at the styling, the Cadenza was perfectly willing to play along on some great roads. Rough pavement can expose some foundational shortcomings relative to competitors like Toyota Avalon or Buick LaCrosse, and there's a benign numbness overall, but we found the Cadenza notably more enjoyable than the Hyundai Azera and perfectly competitive from the perspective of the typical large sedan shopper.
Of particular note to rush-hour commuters, the 2014 Cadenza features an adaptive cruise control system that will bring the vehicle to a full stop in sync with the car ahead, and automatically start forward again if the stop was two seconds or less.
2014 Kia Cadenza
In Your Driveway
Here's what Joe Smartshopper might say about Kia: "The Kia (insert model name) looks good and offers a tempting list of features, but the quality and resale value tradeoffs just aren't worth it. In a few years we'll know if they're for real."
Guess what? It's been a few years, and Kia is for real. Quality continues to prove out, and that's reflected by increasingly competitive resale values. There are still plenty of good reasons to choose one of its many compelling competitors, but dismissing the 2014 Kia Cadenza on the grounds of quality or resale value aren't among them.
Kia Cadenza or Toyota Avalon?
The redesigned-for-2013 Avalon offers a newfound sense of style, superior refinement and a reputation that's helped build Toyota into one of the world's most trusted brands. The Cadenza offers more features for the money, along with a sportier vibe. Your call.
Kia Cadenza or Hyundai Azera?
For the more timeless design and superior ride, handling and feel, we'd go with the 2014 Kia Cadenza.
Kia Cadenza or Acura TL?
Weighing a Kia with an Acura is a bit of a stretch, but take the badges off and it gets more interesting. They're both sporty, tech-savvy value leaders, with TL the clear winner in driving and performance, and the roomier Cadenza taking the features-per-dollar title. Of course, Acura's reputation for great cars and happy owners can't be denied. Choosing between the Kia Cadenza and Acura TL won't be a common dilemma in the real world, but maybe it should be.
Conclusion
Already faced with several great choices in the segment, large sedan shoppers can thank Kia for making their task more difficult. Compounding the issue, the 2014 Kia Cadenza's unique mix of price, features and materials makes it a viable alternative to players on both the mainstream and luxury-brand sides of the divide.
In fact, one reason the Cadenza is so compelling is that Kia doesn't have a luxury-brand big brother to worry about. While Toyota, Honda and Nissan have to consider Lexus, Acura and Infiniti when designing, equipping and pricing their cars, Kia is free to adjust the recipe in whatever way makes the best dish.
Now, please pass the napkins.

2014 Kia Soul gets a smooth new look

Kia-soul-hamsters-blog480
The hamsters are getting a new ride.

A new version of the Kia Soul urban SUV, which carries the brand's dancing rodent mascots in TV commercials, is due out in the summer. It was unveiled Wednesday at the New York International Auto Show.

Kia says it's bigger and has more room inside, its suspension is tuned for better handling and to reduce noise, and its two engines have more power at low speeds for city driving.

The new Soul looks a little less boxy than the current model, and it gets a bunch of interior upgrades.

Kia sold almost 116,000 Souls in the U.S. last year, up 13 percent from 2011. So it wants to keep the vehicle's funky style while improving it with the new model, said Michael Sprague, Kia's American marketing chief.

"The Soul moved the needle significantly from a sales and marketing perspective, becoming one of our top-selling cars," he said in a statement. "It was important that the all-new Soul remain true to the original iconic design while infusing it with improved driving dynamics and desirable features that add appeal, sophistication and value."

Here are some highlights of the new Soul:

UNDER THE HOOD: Base Soul has a 130-horsepower 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine, the company says. Upper-level models, the Plus and Exclaim, get a more powerful 164-horsepower 2-liter engine updated with direct gasoline injection into the cylinders surrounding the pistons. Both engines get new tuning so they produce more power at lower speeds for improved in-town driving, the company says. Six-speed automatic and manual transmissions are available.

OUTSIDE: The Soul is more upright than the old one, yet more rounded. Its wheelbase, the distance between the front and rear wheels, is about an inch longer than the old car at just over 101 inches, and it's slightly wider at 71 inches. LED positioning lights in the front and rear make it look more like other Kias. There's also a wider hatch gate so that bigger items can fit into its cargo bay.

INSIDE: Kia wanted to go upscale on the interior, giving the Soul a more premium feel despite its relatively low price. There are more soft-touch materials on the dash instead of hard plastic. There are a lot of circles in the door panels and instrument cluster, plus red LED mood lighting and steering wheel controls for the audio system. Kia promises a quieter cabin with more front leg and hip room.

FUEL ECONOMY: Not released. Base model with 1.6-liter engine now gets 25 mpg in the city and 30 on the highway. Models with the 2-liter engine get an estimated 23 in the city and 28 on the freeway.

PRICE: Not revealed. Current model starts at $14,400.

2014 Kia Cadenza First Drive

Kialogo
We're behind the wheel of the 2014 Kia Cadenza and it's crawling through Beverly Hills traffic like a seasoned pro. Adaptive cruise is set to 95 mph, but we're averaging something like 6. Her side of the dual-zone climate control is set to 80. Ours is set to 65.

The roughly idling bus next to us is muted by the Kia's acoustics. We're beeped by the lane departure warning system before merging. The streaming Bluetooth audio is tuning out everything else. If not for this whole steering thing, we'd just be along for the ride.

But then a crinkle brings us back into the real world. It's our Chinese takeout in the backseat and it's listing hard off the port bow. A delicate arm is stretched to its maximum, but the crinkle of plastic is getting louder. The smell of garlic is getting stronger. We're one brake application away from an order of Kung Pao carpet. A strained voice says, "I can't reach it. The backseat's too far away."

And with that one line, everything clicks and it dawns that the 2014 Cadenza is a different and altogether special full-size sedan...from Kia.

Prix Fixe

In contrast to the myriad trim, package and powertrain options available in other large, front-wheel-drive sedans, the 2014 Kia Cadenza is only available in one flavor, and with few available toppings.

The only powertrain is a 3.3-liter V6 bolted to a six-speed automatic. Armed with direct injection, this engine makes 293 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 255 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm. Fuel economy numbers haven't been released, but we averaged 20.6 mpg with a best tank of 28.1 mpg in mixed driving.

As for trim levels, there's one. Kia's eschewed the tactic of offering a base car with few options and a seductive low price, for a fully loaded ride that pulls out nearly all the stops. Standard features on this Kia include a back-up camera, navigation system with high-res 8-inch touchscreen, 550-watt Infinity 12-speaker stereo, heated leather seats, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry with push-button start and Bluetooth audio and phone pairing. Standard. On this Kia.

But Wait, There's More!

Should you still feel that you're not thoroughly whooping the Joneses, Kia will happily sell you one, or both, of the available option packs (prices TBD). Our test car had both.

The Premium package adds a split panoramic sunroof, adaptive HID headlights, Napa leather seating surfaces, cooled driver seat, heated outboard rear seats, heated steering wheel, power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, extendable thigh support and a 7-inch TFT LCD that replaces the traditional speedometer.

Go all big-dog on the Kia and step up to the Technology package (Premium pack required) and the 2014 Cadenza gets even more impressive and slightly autonomous. Adaptive cruise control, blind spot detection, lane departure warning, hydrophobic front door window glass (blame this water-repelling feature's absence on the windshield on the sloths at NHTSA) and an electronic parking brake. The 18-inch wheels are replaced by 19s as well.

And, finally, there's a White package that blanches the Napa leather and adds wood grain trim and premium textile to the headliner, pillar trim, rear parcel shelf and sun visors.

Prototypical

Our 2014 Kia Cadenza is an early production prototype and represents a slight amalgamation of the options listed above. We've got most of the White pack and most of the Technology pack, but we have 18-inch wheels instead of the 19s. Half of the trim here is wood, while half is a brushed metal look. Even if they don't visually match, the interior is immaculately prepared, with tight gaps and a quality feel to all of the buttons and actions.

While we'd prefer that the trim had matched, one "not production correct" feature of this tester we'd hate to give up is the 18-inch wheels.

Kia says that this prototype's suspension and steering are "95 percent production" with some minor tweaks to be done to combat some bump steer. We're advising them here and now, in the open, to be careful with any additional tweaks, as the Cadenza we drove is exemplary in the field.

Pavement seams are dispatched with a thunk-thunk that borders on Germanic. Bigger dips are damped away in a single stroke with none of the high-seas yachting often found in this class. Again, think German. Kia clearly did.

One area where Kia was thinking American (and maybe just a hint of Chinese) was the backseat. Not only is there a phenomenal amount of shoulder and legroom, but the outboard seats are heated and there's audio controls located in the rear center armrest. For all of this rear-seat comfort, you give up the ability to fold the seats. Thankfully, there's a ski pass-through and plenty of space in the trunk. Still, if an Ikea trip is on the menu, the Cadenza won't be the first pick.

Kissing Cousins

The 2014 Kia Cadenza is closely related to the current Hyundai Azera, which we've had on our shores since 2012. But it doesn't take a professionally trained butt to notice the differences straight away. The Hyundai is tuned to win over the Buick/Toyota crowd. It's soft and isolated and coddling. The Cadenza's ride and steering, however, give the driver a sense of communication and occasion more in line with Acura and Infiniti.

If you needed proof that Kia and Hyundai are separate organizations doing separate things, look no further than the Cadenza. The platform is the same, but the missions are worlds apart.

Kia's new president, Peter Schreyer may have had his way with the way the car looks ("classy" and "expensive" come to mind) and how it drives, but he didn't have much say in the way it goes. The 3.3-liter V6 is the same one found in the Azera and we'd expect it to do the same 0-60 time of 6.7 seconds and about the same 15.0 seconds at 94.8-mph quarter-mile time.

The Price Debate

Despite going on sale in April, official pricing for the 2014 Kia Cadenza has not been announced. That said, we think we can take a fair guess. The 2013 Toyota Avalon Limited starts at $39,650, while the 2013 Hyundai Azera starts at $33,145. While this fully loaded tester will likely tickle $40,000, a base price of $35,000 feels right.

Ultimately, the greatest threat to the Kia Cadenza's success won't be from outside forces. Unlike Lexus, Acura and Infiniti before it, Kia has decided that its budget name and reputation will not be a hindrance to selling a car for luxury level money.

The 2014 Kia Cadenza surprised us with an elegant combination of driving dynamics, build quality and easy-to-use tech features. But it won't do that for anyone who can't see beyond the badge.

Kia Optima hybrid channels Superman at Chicago Auto Show

Kia-optima
The fifth iteration of superhero-styled Kia vehicles stormed the Chicago Auto Show, this time in the form of an Optima hybrid in Superman livery.

Kia, DC Entertainment and Super Street Magazine will design eight vehicles around the Justice League superheroes. Kia has already unveiled a Koup styled like the Flash, a Soul with a Green Lantern design, an Aquaman Rio and a Cyborg Forte. Left in the Justice League are Batman and Wonder Woman. The eighth and final vehicle will be a combination of all seven superheroes in one.

Kia selected the Optima hybrid as Superman's vehicle because of its “strength and unwavering care for planet earth.”

The Optima has been widened with custom fenders to give the sedan a muscular look, and it has an adjustable suspension system that raises and lowers the vehicle with the push of a button.

The vehicle gets Superman's chest emblem on its hood, and the red paint on the trunk is supposed to recall a cape. The beveled front grille is meant to resemble Superman's belt, and the red headlights mimic his heat vision. The designs are influenced by comic book artist Jim Lee.

Inside, Superman's iconic “S” shield is integrated into the seats and steering wheel.

The joint project serves the purpose of raising awareness of DC Entertainment's “We Can Be Heroes” campaign, a relief effort for the people impacted by drought and famine in Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya.

Kia Optima delivers luxury package for much less

If you want to be coddled in high-end luxury technology and look good doing it, but shudder at the thought of spending $40,000, let me introduce the Kia Optima SX Limited.
This mid-sized sedan comes equipped with all the bells and whistles you would expect from a luxury sedan, at a fraction of the cost.

Exterior styling is top-notch with high intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, LED daytime running lights just above the fog lights and 18-inch chrome wheels. Around back you’ll find more LED lights and dual exhaust pipes. The Limited package also added a glass panoramic sunroof that allows a good amount of light into the cabin; the front section can be tilted or opened.
Moving inside is where you’ll find push-button start with Smart Key, soft leather seats with heat and cooling features, and an instrument panel contoured toward the driver to create a cockpit-like feel. Everything is laid out in a user-friendly and attractive design that makes driving this sedan a pleasure — as well as riding in it.
Add an Infinity audio system to the mix and the Optima is a nice place to be during your commute. Another nice feature is the rear seat legroom. A few of my family members that are in the 6-foot-plus club could sit back there with no troubles.
When you press the accelerator in this Kia, you’ll be pleasantly surprised, thanks to a 274 hp 2.0L turbo GDI engine. Kia says this engine delivers V6-type power with a four-cylinder’s efficiency. I can agree with the power produced, but I’m not so sure about the fuel economy — more on that later. All of this power is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
If the looks of this sedan haven’t won you over already, the on-road dynamics will. This sedan is a blast to drive and I was impressed by the ride comfort while driving on 18-inch wheels. The suspension system absorbs the majority of the road imperfections, but also provides enough feedback to the driver. The acceleration is very satisfying, and when a tight turn comes up, the wide stance of Optima gobbles it up with no drama.
Steering is hydraulic and power assisted, which is OK for the majority of situations, and is a breeze to park around town, but I noticed the steering loses feel while driving at highway speeds.
Another quibble I found dealt with the transmission and maintaining smooth shifting. In normal mode the shifts seem to take longer (higher in the RPMs) making them very harsh and jumpy. The only way I was able to lessen this irritation was to turn on “ECO” mode. Normally ECO mode adjusts the engine/transmission and takes away power so you gain fuel economy.
In the Optima, ECO mode made the shifts quicker, but never felt like I lost any power — the car seemed to run smoother and quieter. If I needed more power all I needed to do was press the gas pedal and it shifted to the correct gear for a quick burst.
Driving the Optima on several different types of roads in Beaver, on the open highway near Cranberry Township and then into Pittsburgh proved the Optima a very capable and comfortable sedan. No matter if the road was brick, concrete or asphalt, this sedan kept the interior quiet and didn’t lose composure. The cruise control was also excellent and provided me an average of 23 mpg to and from Detroit.
Driving in “normal” mode, without ECO mode engaged, I managed 18 mpg combined city/highway. Driving in exclusively ECO mode, I managed 22 mpg combined. So, if you are able to adjust your driving habits accordingly and leave the car in ECO most of the time, you could manage some pretty good fuel economy.
The sticker price for the SX model is $26,800, but with the Limited and technology packages, my tester had brought the bottom line to $30,150. With all of the options, comfort, technology and style this Optima offers, the $30,000 price tag seems reasonable. Add the good warranty from Kia, and you should take a hard look at the Optima if you are in the market for a mid-sized sedan.

DC comics inspired Kia’s on display at auto show

DC Comics and Kia Motors teamed up to help stamp out hunger via the “We Can Be Heroes” campaign which is working to end hunger in Africa.

The companies paired up to create eight, one-of-a-kind vehicles to help get the charities message out. the vehicles, each a different model from Kia, sport characters from “The Justice League” comic books. Two of those cars are currently on display at the North America International Auto Show in Detroit.

The cars eventually will be auctioned off, with the money going to support the charity.

Each vehicle contains the custom artwork of legendary comic artist Jim Lee. Lee is also the co-publisher of DC Comics.

“It was a thrill to see custom cars based upon my Justice League artwork and sketches,” Lee said in a statement. “I have to tip my hat to the teams at West Coast Customs, ‘Rides’ and ‘Super Street’ on their innovative work creating cars that represent iconic characters like Green Lantern, Cyborg, Aquaman and The Flash – all to benefit a great cause.”

The cars that are on display in Detroit include a Green Lantern inspired Soul, and a Batman inspired Optima.

The Soul sports a dapper green and black two-tone exterior paint scheme complete with green mirror-chrome tint on the windows.  Super Street’s build team lowered the Soul to improve its stance and applied widened wheel wells with one-off 18 x 10.5-inch deep-dish wheels.  Traditionally a four-door vehicle, the Soul’s back doors have been welded shut to streamline its appearance.  Blacked out headlights feature projector beams that glow green. Customized Green Lantern-logo fog lights in the widened front fascia, and green LED lighting further enhance the overall appearance

A custom rear cargo compartment houses the Green Lantern power battery with his signature lantern logo etched into a clear panel displaying the superhero’s oath lit by LEDs.  The rear deck also holds a video monitor to display the “We Can Be Heroes” promotional video.  Up front, the Soul’s steering wheel and front seats were reupholstered with green and black leather and includes the Green Lantern logo stitched into the seat backs.  Other interior touches include various dash pieces painted in the green and black scheme.

The Optima sports a matte- and piano-black paint scheme, a dramatically lowered coilover suspension and muscular ground effects kit, huge Ksport performance brakes for extreme stopping power, custom-designed 20-inch black wheels with one-of-a-kind Batman-logo center caps and a performance exhaust system.  Other exterior modifications include a custom front grille shaped like a batwing that took over 40 hours to create, yellow LED lighting accents throughout the vehicle and the iconic bat signal etched into the SXL’s HID headlights.

Moving beneath the cape, the Optima‘s seating surfaces are costumed in custom black leather and suede with bold yellow accent stitching. Gotham City‘s streets  — the place that Batman calls home  — are full of villains, and this Optima is ready for action at a moment‘s notice with crime-fighting elements like utility throwing stars installed in the center console.

The other cars in the fleet include a Cyborg inspired Forte, an Aquaman inspired Rio, and a Flash inspired Forte Coupe.

There are still three cars in the fleet yet to be unveiled, they are set to feature Superman, Wonder Woman and a special vehicle with all 7-members of the team.

“We are proud to be raising awareness for the ’We Can Be Heroes’ campaign and look forward to unveiling three more crime-fighting Kias at future auto shows,” said Michael Sprague, executive vice president of marketing for Kia.

We Can Be Heroes supports the efforts of three humanitarian aid organizations working in Africa—Save the Children, International Rescue Committee and Mercy Corps—as part of the global effort to fight the current hunger crisis in the Horn of Africa. The region is suffering its worst drought and famine in over 60 years, with 13 million in need of critical assistance.

Kia Motors Announces Google Maps Integration to Enhance In-Car Connectivity

Kia-logo-scaled1000
Kia Motors America (KMA) today announced it will work with Google to provide content and search-based solutions enabled by Application Program Interfaces (APIs) for the second-generation of the automaker's innovative UVO eServices telematics system.  These new solutions will initially be introduced on the new 2014 Sorento CUV. The immediate integration of Google solutions will utilize Google Maps and Google Places to acquire driving directions and locate Points of Interest (POIs) in a seamless and organic manner. KMA and Google look forward to continuing to work together to bring innovative navigation solutions to enhance the connected car experience.

Available with the 2014 Sorento CUV, the new Google-powered UVO system will serve Kia owners whether they are in their cars or away from them. Enabled by the Send2Car feature, Kia owners can send a POI or destination to their car directly from the Google Maps via their Smartphone1 UVO app. From within the car, Kia owners will benefit from Google Places, which will provide POI and destination resources such as a dealership location, and Google Maps, which will provide directions to virtually anywhere and everywhere a car can travel.

"The newest iteration of the UVO platform is a breakthrough as one of the industry's first mobile pure app-based telematics systems, and now with the Google solutions and APIs, we take the platform to yet another level of enhancement for the Kia customer," said Henry Bzeih , head of the connected car program and chief technology strategist, KMA. "Due to the popularity and ease-of-use of Google Maps, owners can remain confident in the technology and information being delivered to them."

UVO continues to offer drivers hands-free mobile phone management capabilities and hands-free control of music from a variety of media sources, including CD, radio, USB, media player, and the Digital Jukebox.  With UVO eServices, users will now be able to control the 2014 Sorento's on-board navigation system through voice commands when the vehicle is outfitted with the UVO eServices/navigation package.  Also new with UVO eServices is an enhanced telematics suite that offers a number of maintenance and infotainment functions, including 911 Connect, enhanced Roadside Assist2, Automatic Diagnostics, Manual Diagnostics, Scheduled Diagnostics, vehicle maintenance, and eServices Guide, many of which are run through the owner's Smartphone equipped with the UVO eServices app available at no charge3.

Advanced Voice Recognition makes it simple to operate many of UVO eServices functions, including the Sorento's voice activated navigation system. USB connectivity allows users to download music files from a memory stick into the Digital Jukebox. The large eight-inch touch screen is easy to operate and incorporates Sorento's rear camera display4, Infinity®5 Premium Sound System and My POIs (personal Points of Interest via online maps), a feature that makes it easy to customize the owner's most visited locations. UVO eServices is compatible with iPhone®6 at launch and Android® phones are expected to be compatible in the second quarter of 2013.

Key Features of UVO eServices:

  • Google Integration: Utilization of Google Maps and Google Places to provide direction and location information.
  • eServices Guide:  Accessed via the touch-screen or voice command, eServices Guide places a phone call via Bluetooth® hands free connectivity7 to a voice response system that explains UVO eServices to the driver in an interactive manner.
  • Car Care Web:  Through the UVO eServices owner's portal, known as "Car Care Web," owners can check vehicle diagnostics, vehicle status, maintenance schedules, driving behavior, and schedule appointments with their preferred or nearby dealer via their home computer or mobile device. Owners also can earn awards for safe and eco-friendly driving viewable on Car Care Web should they rank high enough among their fellow UVO eServices owners.
  • My POI:  Also available to UVO eServices owners is My POI, a feature that allows owners to send a destination from Google Maps through their Smartphone to their UVO eServices vehicle.  In the convenience of their home or office, the customer selects a destination from the Web via Google Maps, once the customer's Smartphone receives the destination it will send the destination to the vehicle's navigation system the next time the Smartphone is paired via Bluetooth® wireless technology. In addition, all destinations sent from Google Maps will be copied to the owner's Car Care Web. (My POI is only available with UVO eServices vehicles equipped with navigation).
  • Vehicle Diagnostics:  If UVO's eServices identifies a problem by way of the Automatic Diagnostics function, it will communicate the vehicle's issue(s) and its location to Kia's 24/7 call center or will schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership upon user request.  With Manual Diagnostics, at the owner's preference, UVO eServices can connect the user with Kia's 24/7 call center or schedule an appointment online with the nearest Kia dealership, should an issue be found.  Additionally, the user can take advantage of Scheduled Diagnostics from their Smartphone, setting a monthly diagnostic check of the vehicle.  Upon completion, any issues found are automatically forwarded to Car Care Web.
  • 911 Connect8: In case of an airbag deployment, the Crash Notification Assist function will alert emergency services.  During a 10-second window, the driver has the option to cancel the call, otherwise UVO eServices will dial 9-1-1, read the vehicle's location out loud to the emergency services operator and allow the operator to speak with the vehicle occupants.
  • Parking Minder: If the driver happens to forget where they parked the car, the Parking Minder function helps find it by sending the location of the vehicle to the driver's phone.  If preferred, the owner also can take pictures of the surrounding area for reference, write a reminder note, email his or her location and set an alarm if the car is parked at a meter.  To guide the owner back, the UVO eServices Smartphone app will display the owner and the vehicle's locations on a map.

Following the introduction of UVO eServices in the Sorento, the system will be offered in other models in the Kia lineup, including the all-new 2014 Forte sedan.
